FOLKSINGER’S LIFE
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
Every song’s been sung but this one
Every line written already been wrote
Every hero’s a star how can I expect to make it that far
Livin’ on three chords and just a few notes
Every woman to love has been loved
Every love given already been gave
Every life together’s been lived
I’ve given every ounce of love I have to give
Can there be anything left to save
Folksinger’s life It’s a folksinger’s life
Mitchell Baez and Bob all got there
Along with Mary Peter and Paul
Bustin’ chords and beggin’ for gigs
Just tryin’ to make it not make it big
Givin’ their heart their soul and their all
Folksinger’s life It’s a folksinger’s life
Do you want to go there with me
Livin’ in Motel Sixes out on the road
Eatin’ Big Macs® stale crackers and cheese
Might not be for you but it’s the life I lead
Singin’ and livin’ my songs on the road
Folksinger’s life It’s a folksinger’s life

ROLL ON MIGHTY RIVER
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
Roll on mighty river
Roll on through the night
Roll on Mississippi
With all of your might
River flowing deep and wide
River roll just like a tide
That won’t stop growing till it reaches shore
Things were bad I knew they couldn’t get worse
Now there’s mud where once fertile earth
Gave the crops that fed my family and me
Roll on mighty river
Roll on through the night
Roll on Mississippi
With all of your might
My grand-dad built this town
Now the river’s trying to tear it down
Taking lives and all their memories
But this town’s not just bricks and stone
It’s the heart that makes it a home
It’s that heart that’ll build it again
Roll on mighty river
Roll on through the night
Roll on Mississippi
With all of your might

IF I COULD
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
(also Award Winning Music Video)
If I could step in to that photograph from 1952
I’d love to sit and chat awhile just me and you
We could talk about your worries and what the future might bring
Then I could show you how your family turned out
You wouldn’t have to worry ‘bout a thing
About a thing, ma, not a thing
I want to be there in 1946
When the big one had just ended and you moved back to the sticks
You were just a young man then and swingin’ life by the tail
I can see it in that photograph
It tells the story so well
Tells the story so well, dad, story so well
If I could jump into that newsreel in Dallas
I could jump in front of your car
Maybe I could slow the motorcade down before you went too far
How could things have been different today if you walked out of Dallas town
Maybe the world would be better off if you never got shot down
He never shot you down, Jack there in Dallas town
If I could sit and talk to you about this one regret
You know I might suggest to you not to light another cigarette
We still might be talkin’ to each other just like it used to be
Like we always did together two brothers just you and me
Just you and me, Steve, just you and me

CHICAGO TOWN
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
I don’t know what I’m doin’ here
I come back this time ev’ry year
Do you think you could buy me a beer
Since we’re both sittin’ here
Yeh, we’re both sittin’ here
Stuck here in this room feelin’ down
Sittin’ in a hotel in Chicago-town
The sky’s so gray and the leaves are brown
Here in Chicago-town
Yeh, in Chicago-town
Did I tell you ‘bout that kid of mine
Thought by now he’d be doin’ time
That may sound cruel and a bit unkind
I’m feelin’ better now he’s towin’ the line
Yeh, my boy’s been towin’ the line
Try to get some sleep what will I do
Lie here awake just thinkin’ of you
There ain’t no better place for havin’ the blues
Here in the home of the Blues
Chicago the home of the Blues

‘48 STUDEBAKER PICK UP
(from the CD Angel and the Folksinger)
Somewhere in a junkyard in Southern Illinois
There’s a 48 Studebaker Pick Up and the memory of two young boys
It was the summer of ‘69 I remember it to this day
When my uncle took my cousin and me on a get-away
The roads they’re the same but the time has faded
Those memories they’re still here with me
All the times in Illinois that I remember as a boy
You know those times they mean so much to me
My uncle got my cousin and me in the cab of that old truck
And took us out to the back roads to try our luck
Driving to grown-ups ain’t no real big deal
But for two young boys that driving’s such a thrill
Now first gear ground and whined and my uncle’s face looked pained
I think he was saying a prayer under his breath
Which was going to give out first his clutch-plate or his nerves
To this day I think he was figuring that in his head
Now as I travel down life’s road I can see
It ain’t always as smooth as it could be
With my family and friends and people like Uncle Bill
I know I can travel it easily

ANGEL CHILD
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
Little Girl
Daddy’s pride and Mother’s pearl
You’re laughter a precious gift to our world
Black-bean eyed, Angel Child
Precious One
Shining down the gift of God’s own Son
Bringing His light to everyone
Through your smile, Angel Child
He gave the gift of this little child
A gift we held and cherished for too short a while
A gift of love sent from above
Little Angel Child
Little One
Stay here with us for through your love
You’re watching and loving us from above
All the while, Angel Child
Blessed One
Take our prayer to heaven and the Father there
Stay here in our hearts keep us aware
The love He sent to us through your smile
He gave the gift of this little child
A gift we held and cherished for too short a while
A gift of love sent from above
Little Angel Child
You’re a special one… God’s Angel Child
You’re a special one our Angel Child

BEAUTIFUL THAT IS REAL
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
How do I write a song about you
How do I tell you how I feel
The more I look at you I come to realize
It’s not a beautiful dream
It’s beautiful that is real
The light on your face makes me wonder
Why I never looked at you like this before
In the moonlight I can see the deeper meaning
Into your soul I gaze
Through this open door
I love the way that I feel when I am with you
I surrender my emotion in your arms
The beauty in your smile draws me closer
It’s not a beautiful dream
It’s beautiful that is real

BLIND BOY'S DREAM
(from the CD Hotel deVille)
Joey went to sleep tonight in Boston but his dreams took him very far away
Grand Canyon was grand in shades of red and tan
Las Vegas lights carrying him away
Joey where’d you go last night and how long did you stay?
Tell us your story in your own way
Bright colors and lights or to you is it star-less nights
What do blind boys see when they dream
Joey woke up this morning in Boston the sky was a bright shade of blue
It could have been a hazy grey or a bright and sunny day
Tell me Joe do you hear the kids at play?
Joey where’d you go last night and how long did you stay?
Tell us your story in your own way
Bright colors and lights or to you is it star-less nights
What do blind boys see when they dream
Joey had a dream tonight in Boston in his dream he saw the face of God
God’s eyes were smiling bright he gave Joey a blessing that night
Because Joe sees better than most of us see
Joey where’d you go last night and how long did you stay?
Tell us your story in your own way
Bright colors and lights or to you is it star-less nights
What do blind boys see when they dream
Joey we know where you went last night God gave you a special light
‘Cause you see better than most of us see... Yeh, you see better than me

EMBERS OF LOVE
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
Drop of water in the ocean
Drop of oil in a stream
Drop in interest in the love life of you and me
Drop in temperature but rising
Somehow it’s not surprising
A spark’s still in there somewhere for you and me
Burning ember of love it’s hot and rising
A spark’s still in there somewhere for you and me
The ember becomes a flame who are we to cry and complain
If our love lasts forever we’ll let it be
The cry of a lonesome pigeon
The cry of babies in the night
The cry of you when we argue and fight
What are we fighting for
Like you I don’t want to fight no more
Let’s say “I love you” then we’ll say goodnight

FALLEN IN LOVE
(from the CD Manchester Mornings)
Baby oh baby
If you knew what you do to me
I’ve fallen in love and can’t get up
Got so much love it overflows my cup
I want to make lovin’ to you all the time
I want to be yours and you be mine
Tell me baby tell me please
Tell me that you feel the same ‘bout me
Saw you on the street the other day
I prayed oh God you’d look my way
Want to tell you honey my love is true
I want you with me and me with you
Come on baby Tell me hey
Say sweet baby you feel the same way
Want hold you in my arms so tight
Hold you all day into the night
We’ll talk lovin’ all day long
Then we’ll make love til the break of dawn
Tell me honey tell me true
Say you fell for me like I fell for you
{Repeat 1}

FLIGHT 802
(from the CD Hotel deVille)
She sat looking out the window of Flight 802 leaving London
She knew when she arrived he’d be waiting to talk to her alone
As she sat there on the tarmac of Flight 802 going to Boston
She knew when she arrived he’d tell her that he was leaving home
Why can’t love last forever? Why can’t the feelings stay strong?
Why do people hurt each other? But when it’s over we carry on ... carry on
Nothing lasts forever he told her right before she left Boston
But she just told herself he was talking about her music career
But a voice deep down inside her told her there was a need to worry
And it gnawed at her heart till it became her greatest fear
Why can’t love last forever? Why can’t the feelings stay strong?
Why do people hurt each other? But when it’s over we carry on... carry on
As she sat there on the tarmac on Flight 802 leaving London
She decided right then and there that she never would arrive
So she got back off the plane of Flight 802 going to Boston
And headed out for France aboard an out-bound train
Why can’t love last forever? Why can’t the feelings stay strong?
Why do people hurt each other? But when it’s over we carry on... carry on
(She said) Why didn’t love last forever? Why couldn’t those feelings stay strong?
But now that it’s over this will make one hell of a song, I’ll write a song
And carry on...

CARRY ME UP TO BED
(Single: Released in 2005)
It's late in the evening she brushes her teeth
After warm milk and cookies with her mother and me
She picks out her favorite book with a glean in her eye
And looks up in wonder with a hint of surprise
(She says) "Daddy please carry me up to bed
Sometimes I worry and sometimes I'm sad
But I always feel safer, here in your arms
So daddy please carry me up to bed"
Every night it's the same ritual when the sun's going down
My little princess standing there in her favorite night gown
She knows there's no question she can always count on me
But each and every evening it's the same sweet plea
(She says) "Daddy please carry me up to bed
Sometimes I worry and sometimes I'm sad
But I always feel safer, here in your arms
So daddy please carry me up to bed"
Then one Saturday the phone rang they were callin' me back
"Pack your bags and your uniform, you're headed for Iraq."
They reminded me of that day long ago when I signed on the line
Bed-time stories and my Princess could wait till some other time
Well I was talkin' to my wife about what needed done
The gutters needed cleaning and the old truck just won't run
It was then that I realized, it was half-past eight
And a sweet voice on the extension line made my heart break
(She says) "Daddy please carry me up to bed
Sometimes I worry and sometimes I'm sad
But I always feel safer, here in your arms
So daddy please carry me up to bed"
Well I tried to explain that Daddy has a job to do
As I choked back the tears I said, "But Daddy loves you"
A five year old just can't understand the "logic" of war
And as I sit here in the green zone I'm not sure I do anymore
As she says... (chorus)
last time:
My Princess cries "Daddy please carry me up to bed
Sometimes I worry and sometimes I'm sad
But I always feel safer, here in your arms
So daddy please carry me up to bed...
Daddy PLEASE come back home.... and Carry Me Up To Bed!"
